The subtitle is the main thrust of this book re the changes in Christianity's numbers of active attendees and in philosophy for various churches since the 1970s. Considers mostly Protestant churches, but Catholics are included in some of the discussions. Having recently reviewed the PEW "nones" study, 2024 ed., I found Hollinger's writing illustrated some of the reasons for the massive exit of Christians from church going/activities & political behaviors.
Have your dictionary close by. This is written by a Cal professor & he uses a lot of 50 cent words. I read it twice to cement the ideas. I remain a church-going Christian. The subtitle is the main thrust of this book re the changes in Christianity's numbers of active attendees and in philosophy for various churches since the 1970s. Hadn't seen this for a long time & was still impressed. Director's comments included where Ms. Streisand tells of a unique way of preparing to film. I had just read The Weight of Ink by Rachel Kadish & was delighted to find the same drive to learn in both Yentl & Ester, in similar situations some 200 years apart. "What if Shakespeare had a sister?", asked Virginia Woolf.Hadn't seen this for a long time & was still impressed. Reader does a nice job portraying the voices of the various characters. I especially liked the voice for the Dine grandmother.

The text moves around among the 4 main characters. There are different readers for each character, making it easier to follow on audio. Always good to hear local accents, German, Italian and English. Enjoyed the story. Morelli wrote a similar themed novel, but this one is more expanded. Contrast between good and evil is stark, but descriptions are not overwhelming, thus suitable for teens as well. Easy to root for many of the characters. The text moves around among the 4 main characters. There are different readers for each character, making it easier to follow on audio. Difficult, but interesting. Amazing amount of research which I hope he applies to other topics of the period, as the detail is enlightening. The extraordinary long-term ordeal of Lanah Sawyer is indicative of the slog many women endured then and still, when they report sexual assault or rape.Difficult, but interesting. Some reviewers find this too extreme in Elizabeth's struggle in the patriarchal society of the 60s. Not if you lived it, and are seeing it repeated with your daughters! Pay attention, women. It's still going on in many workplaces & society. Resist, in every aspect of your lives. I am married to a man who has long understood this tragedy. We need to teach our grandkids! that Elizabeth's plight is still very real. Some reviewers find this too extreme in Elizabeth's struggle in the patriarchal society of the 60s. Completely full of anecdotal notes from so many of Agatha Christie's writing, Ms. Worsley presents the multifaceted working woman of the early to middle 20th century. No doubt, Worsley's access to personal letters enhance this rendering of a beloved mystery writer & a person who enjoyed her with & her life. Only deficit: the narration is a little too uneven.

This is such an interesting book, but we could all benefit more from her research if it had an index. Arrrgh! I can see her surrounded by all this ephemera with no contemporaneous indexing to guide her. Otherwise, remarkable work.

Mostly, this book focuses on processes, high level decisions & readiness for a pandemic, rather than on the specific persons who carried out the hasty plans made in response to COVID-19. It does feel like walking through those uncertain weeks & months & years in fast forward. Awesome people. The collected ideas & strategies show how we must work together at critical times like these in order to be much better prepared for the next pandemic, and there will be one. Perhaps this book is miscataloged & would be better in Teen section? Odie & Emmy seem to have self knowledge way beyond their years, even for the Depression Era. The adventure & language would appeal to serious teens interested in historical fiction.
