A better than average serial killer film, based on real events that captured Russia's bureaucracy and denial, during the investigation that covered most of the 1980's to the early 1990's, resulting in a conviction of 52 murders.
Unfortunately this copy of two is starting to wear out and has a couple spots that get snagged (in my machine), but does continue without destroying the whole viewing of the film. Worth the patience.

Excellent crime thriller about the Soviet Union's most prolific serial killer. Extremely well-acted by Stephen Rea as the main detective and Donald Sutherland as his boss, the movie is well served by top flight performances by the entire cast, including Jeffrey DeMunn, Joss Acklund, and Max Von Sydow. Although we are not kept in the dark as to the identity of the killer, the procedural about how the police endeavor to catch him, despite the counter-productive bureaucracy of the Soviet system, is fascinating and thrilling. The movie has its share of gore and may be tough on viewers sensitive to that sort of thing, especially since the ages of the victims were most often 17 and younger. Highly recommended.

a paint-by-number script, with sets to match, right out of road show productions, acting that is mannered rather than convincing, a stage play in HBO clothing, marred irretrievably throughout by everyone's flawed Russian accents - Max von Sydow, however, stands out, not unexpectedly, with an impeccable, again, though brief, however pivotal, performance

Excellent, outstanding, fascinating. True story. Prime acting.

Solid acting, terrific script. Horror without gore, tension without mystery. Definitely a classic.

Great casting, excellent performances and direction filled with suspense and thrills. After over 20 years since it was made, the film is still fresh and breathing.

This is a seriously good movie. It is about the hunt for a major serial killer in Russia and one man's fight against Russian bureaucracy while trying to catch the killer. FIVE STARS. Well worth your time. The killer was Andrei Chikatilo who killed over 50 children. One politico remarked , we do not have serial killers, it is an American phenomenon. This is a film that you can watch more than once. Haunting. Not something you;ll forget.

I was checking the ratings of Donald Sutherland and found one of the highest rated films of his is "Citizen X'. After viewing the film, I stand and shout again, "Independent Films Wins Out Again". Here Donald Sutherland plays a Russian General. I know what your thinking, "How can he play a Russian General?" Well, he is terrific as a Russian General and the whole cast around is exceptional. The movie was made by Home Box Office in 2000. I don't receive Home Box Office and many of you may have also missed this wonderful film. I was so impressed that I would have to say it is one of the best films I have watched this year. Now it is only January, 29, 2015, but I do watch a new movie most every day. Why not see if "Citizen X" makes your day?

Considering that this is a made-for-TV movie (HBO) and a cast of great talents including Imelda Staunton in a paltry role and Max von Sydow, this is great viewing! This is one good thing about TV movies, they're not very arty and basically rely on a good story line.

This one is unique: made by brilliant Western artists from many countries, it gives the impression of being made in Russia, by Russians. In some ways, it's all you need to know about the pre-perestroika Soviet Union. If you are the person who "borrowed" the only copy, please bring it back. Check out Donald Sutherland as a jolly bureaucrat.
