By the time you're a few chapters into her Adam and Eve and Pinch Me -- just when you are likely to be congratulating yourself for realizing that Jock Lewis, Jerry Leach, and Jeff Leigh are all the same man -- you'll also realize that the con man with so many names isn't the real mystery here at all. This man -- let's call him JL -- has, indeed, tricked three women out of their savings and faked his own death, twice, before his latest disappearance. But the three victims of JL's sordid schemes are also connected in another, far more dangerous, way: These three women will be as astonished as anyone to discover that the darkest tie that binds them isn't JL, it's a string of bloody murders

Fascinated by the characters themselves before you even discover all the odd ways they become linked.

I think this is my favourite Rendell book so far. Hated to put it down. It is about 3 women who are only connected by a charming con man. There are 2 murders, mental illness, politics and homosexuality. Great reading.
