Maria decides to move to New York from South Carolina to live with her estranged mother. Her journey begins with her mother being twelve hours late to pick her up at Penn Station. Maria bonds with record store employee Gram, who coincidentally is also from South Carolina. There are endless references to different bands and concerts, with a climactic argument happening over a Joni Mitchell album. The quirky cover and title belies how serious this book is at times, with music being unable to save these troubled characters.
