It's 1715 on the island of Santa Campana and the diabolical pirate Blackbeard reigns over a rogue nation of thieves, outlaws and miscreant sailors. An extraordinary action adventure where one can't be sure whether the pirates or the British crown are the villains.

It's really too bad this wasn't a cable production, because NBC flubbed it. The acting talent is solid (especially the Blackbeard, Lowe & Jagger characters), and the writing & dialogue were pretty strong too, but everything else about the production is just mediocre. I didn't like a lot of the set & art design. The costumes were all ridiculous (as an example, a lot of the time it looks like Blackbeard is wearing pajamas and Lowe looks like he's wearing a prep school boy's uniform). I have no idea if any of that was historically accurate, and I don't care; they should have put a LOT more effort into the visual look of this show. And most importantly, the direction as a whole just sucks. Camera work, music selection, name it. This was pretty much made like a low budget mini-series. I'm a fan of malkovich so I'll probably go ahead and watch a second season of this if they make one, but really there are much better TV shows out there to watch, so unless you're a fan of his like me, I'd suggest skipping this.

The costumes leave a lot to the imagination but the ships are great even though inaccurate! Spanish galleons were much taller in the back than English ones. Thankfully, Malcovich's acting improved over the course of the season. Initially I felt like I was watching a depiction of Blackbeard... if he had been gay. Not roguish enough for the reputation earned. It's nice to see at least one female pirate character, as a handful were actually known to have existed. This is a good show, worth a look, plenty of escapism. A nice change from crime/police drama shows.

Low budget and historically indifferent,.. but captivating, often intense, and visually lush.
A sometimes silly storyline,.. but strongly acted.

Will there be a Season 2 ?
