An interesting take on Sherlock Holmes- it's an intriguing story if you stick with it to the end.

Murder by Decree has the fictional Sherlock Holmes solving the real Jack the Ripper serial murder case (which was never solved). Just two years before this film, Christopher Plummer played Holmes on an ITV series called Sunday Night Drama. Perhaps someone then suggested that they develop a theatrical film for Plummer. It was nice to see Plummer and James Mason teaming together, but the plot seemed a little shaky. While I hate most sequels, a sequel is an indication of success of the first film. Perhaps no sequel here means this film was not the success they were hoping for.

This is a 1979 British-Canadian thriller directed by Bob Clark.
The story involves Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in the case of the serial murderer Jack the Ripper.
As Holmes investigates London's most infamous case, he finds that the Ripper has friends in high places.
The plot behind the murders is taken from the book "Jack the Ripper: The Final Solution" by Stephen Knight.
The original script contained the names of the historical suspects, Sir William Gull, 1st Baronet and John Netley.
In the actual film, they are referred to as Thomas Spivy (Gull) and William Slade (Netley).
A certain theory goes that Jack the Ripper was actually the Duke of Clarence, son of Queen Victoria.
The film seems to suggest that this is the case.
In any case, the film looks so dark literally during the fighting scenes, if not throughout the entire film.

This is my all time favorite Holmes movie. The essence of the times. the, the story, the acting are superb. My only regret is that Christopher Plummer limited his role in this one movie.

Execellent Movie!
It works well as a Sherlock Holmes and Jack The Ripper film.

An exceptional Holmes film; Plummer inhabits the part perfectly.

Skip It - Murder by Decree (1979) 124 min. The look of the film (whenever a review starts this way, you just know the film is going to be panned), is perfect but the story is too contrived to allow the viewer any chance to follow along with the investigation by Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Basil Rathbone will always be the perfect Sherlock (Christopher Plummer just doesn’t cut it). On the other hand, James Mason’s Dr. Watson is bang-on.

Unusually good Victorian murder mystery based on the Jack-the-Ripper case. Elegantly produced & features powerhouse cast. The same plot was handled more sensationally in "From Hell".
