The profoundly original and wildly entertaining short stories of a legendary Twilight Zone writer Take an uneasy step and fall headlong into the world of Charles Beaumont- a world where lions stalk the plains, classic cars rove the streets, and spacecrafts hover just overhead. Here roam musicians, magicians, vampires, aliens, androids, and perhaps even the Devil himself. With dizzying feats of master storytelling and joyously eccentric humor, Beaumont imagined nightmares so vast and varied they burst through the walls of whatever box might contain them. Supernatural, horror, noir, science fiction, fantasy, and more- all were equally at home in his wondrous mind. In Beaumont's hands, nothing is impossible- it all seems plausible, even likely. Perchance to Dream contains a selection of Beaumont's finest stories - including five that he later adapted for Twilight Zone episodes - with a foreword by Ray Bradbury and an afterword by William Shatner. 'In every genre he explored, Beaumont wrote with style, with a sure sense of his characters. His stories are often haunting, and though their concerns are ever enduring, they provide a clear window into the fears and hopes of his time.' Dean Koontz

I had never heard of Charles Beaumont until a friend lent me this collection of his stories. Beaumont wrote a bunch of "Twilight Zone" episodes, a screenplay, and was part of a group of California sci-fi writers that also included Richard Matheson and Ray Bradbury, who contributes the introduction. If you're familiar with "The Twilight Zone," his mix of the darkly comic with the unsettling will be familiar. Sadly Beaumont died quite young. This a great overview of his work. William Shatner wrote the afterword. The title comes from "Hamlet."
