SummaryAdd a Summary
In the span of one day, Inspector Ashwin Chopra enters into forced retirement, uncovers a mystery no one wanted solved, and inherits a baby elephant. All three are a problem to Chopra.
He does want to be retired. A policeman known for his integrity for more than thirty years, one of the most respected men on the Mumbai force, Chopra resents the heart condition which forces him into retirement. He resents the new head of police who refuses to investigate the death of a young man from the wrong side of the tracks. He resents having a baby elephant foisted upon him from his late, lamented, eccentric uncle.
But Chopra is also man with time on his hands, a sense of justice that cannot be easily retired, and compassion for the little grieving elephant who seems to have given up on life. He also has a deep love for his country, no matter how bewilderingly fast it is changing, and for his wife, known as Poppy.
As Poppy frets over Chopra’s health and worries about her own childlessness, Chopra takes the elephant – he names Ganesha - in hand as he searches Mumbai for answers. He needs answers to the young man’s death, and answers on how to aid an ailing pachyderm. What he uncovers is a big picture of just how much his beloved country has changed, answers regarding his own family, and forges a new purpose for himself, Poppy and the Cadbury Dairy Milk-loving Baby Ganesha.
This is the first in a spellbinding new detective series, one that expertly emotes the sights, sounds and smells of India – the good, the bad and the ugly. Author Vaseem Khan gives us an honest hero in Chopra, a mystery worth several evenings of contemplation, and one of the most unusual sidekicks ever brought to life on page.
