"Colonial New Guinea-1906: a small group of mostly German nudists live an extreme back-to-nature existence on the remote island of Kabakon. Eating only coconuts and bananas, they purport to worship the sun. One of their members-Max Lutzow-has recently died, allegedly from malaria. This book is an aberrancy in the works of Adrian McKinty. In this novel he mixes historical truth with fiction and the result is a subdued version of McKinty's work. It lacks a wit that is a trademark of McKinty, and even lacks a strong protagonist. The narrative changes from character to character at times.

Still, I liked the novel and its characters. The plot moves at a desultory pace and speeds up at the end. McKinty does have a way with words and paints some nice descriptions of the tropical climes of New Guinea. There is enough period history to remind us that this is partly a true story, yet enough fiction to move the story along.

An interesting tale mostly for the historical research/setting. The ending isn't as "neat" as it might be but the plot and quirky characters kept me going all the way.
