"Henryetta is full of gossip about the arrival of a controversial televangelist, but it's the death of a little old lady on Rose's street that catches her attention. The local police deem her death to be of natural causes, but Rose suspects foul play and so does an unlikely supporter--the president of the Busy Body Club, her eighty-tow year old neighbor Mildred. But Rose is in the middle of opening her nursery with her sister Violet, as well as stalling her boyfriend Joe's family of rich socialites who are determined to meet her. Add in far too many encounters with Fenton County's new assistant D.A., and it's just another day in the life of Rose Gardner--complete chaos."--

There was a lot going on in this third book in the Rose Gardner Mystery series. Rose's character continues to grow and develop as she becomes more independent. Her sister still tries to control Rose, but she is discovering she has the right to determine her own road in life, no matter what her sister wants. This is a well plotted and entertaining mystery. Rose once again stumbles into the middle of the mystery, and finds herself a target. There are some relationship issues going on with both Violet and Rose, and who knows where these may lead. Still enjoying the series, and despite what I said in my review of book 2 I am still hooked. Continuing on to book 4...

Having read both of the previous books in this series, Thirty and a Half Excuses proved to be a slightly more interesting addition. Despite the fact that Rose’s irrational and irresponsible behavior hadn’t eased up at all, the overall plot was enough to keep me going. While I am still not convinced that Rose is heroine material, the one saving grace was that Thirty and a Half Excuses delved further into the emotions of the characters, providing them with much more depth than was previously offered. Unfortunately, it came at the expense of ruining the integrity of one character in particular, which seemed to come out of nowhere and felt somewhat forced in order to create a cliffhanger.
