I don't know why anyone would want to read this book. Today Ines Suarez would be considered a terrorist!

Once again Allende combines history, romance, and adventure to create a story steeped in the Spanish conquest of the Americas. A poor Spanish seamstress follows her husband to the new world and finds herself caught up in the horrors of war, the frantic quest for gold and the plight of the indigenous people. When she finds that her husband has been killed in battle, she becomes the mistress of the man who is determined to become the conqueror of Chile.

A very captivating and moving novel. Isabel Allende is a great story teller. Details of love, suffering, tragedy and triumph are a big part in all her books, and "Ines of my soul" is no exception. It is a great read and a book that is not easy to put down. Great historical detail with human emotion. Two thumbs up.

Allende uses the voice of an elderly woman describing her life to re-tell the history of the Spanish colonization of Chile. It is a brutal re-telling - not for the squeamish - but at the same time a story of love and survival.

Except for the sudden ending - which left me feeling a little unfinished - this was a good solid read with lots of history but very readable.
