A ballet based on Shakespeare's tragicomedy that focuses on King Leontes, who accuses his boyhood friend of betrayal, condemns his wife for adultery, and banishes his newborn daughter. The story is taken up fifteen years later when the wronged and innocent parties are re-united with the king who has since come to his senses and now lives in a state of perpetual grief and regret.

Dancing, sets, costumes and orchestra first-rate, music and choreography not. Movement unevocative, repetitive. Music mostly tuneless and unmemorable despite live folk band on stage with dancers in Act II. Highlights include ship on a storm-tossed sea in Act I, a picnic under a giant tree in Act II and one of the statues that comes implausibly but wonderfully to life in the final scene. Householders were divided on whether the governess/nanny character was danced by a man or a woman. Such enormous feet and the hands of a giantess! Reminiscent of Lady Macbeth in the Bolshoi's production. Shall we be seeing more like this, one wonders?
