One of the most influential postwar American artists and a leading figure of California Light and Space art, Irwin is perhaps best known for ephemeral installations that illuminate the processes and variability of perception. Irwin has long been recognized as one of the preeminent artists of our time, and he has been the subject of numerous shows over the past sixty years. Yet, because of the nature of his art, his work does not lend itself easilty to scholarly studies and exhibitions. With this presentation, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden offers and unprecendented examination of Irwin's extraordinary trajectory between 1958 and 1970, a time when he moved from creating small-scale abstract paintings to temporary installations that respond to the unique qualities of a given site. During this relatively brief span, Irwin methodically interrogated the essential premises of art, and, in the process, redefined what a work of art could be, proposing that art is not limited to objects but rather is a way of seeing."
