Sophia Davenport writes to Caroline Weston in regards to her position as a governess in the home of the widow of General Ashley. She writes that this family is "one of the most affectionate, warm-hearted families I have ever met with." Miss Ashley has a large number of slaves who General Ashley wanted to emancipate in his will but he died before signing the will. His sisters will not consent to their emancipation. She wishes she could see some English papers to read about the India Emancipation as she has "seen in some paper..that there is a great deal of trouble there, do write me what you know about it." She discusses her encounters and discussions with Missouri men and women on the subject of slavery.
