This is the third collected volume in the continuing saga of the Eisner Award-winning and critically acclaimed fantasy comic series, Mouse Guard, serving as a prequel to the two previous volumes. Set in 1115, this is the story of how the Guardmouse Celanawe's paw first touched the legendary weapon, the Black Axe. The arrival of distant kin takes Celanawe on an adventure that will carry him across the sea to uncharted waters and lands, all while unraveling the legend of Farrer, the blacksmith who forged the mythic axe. This hardcover collection will include an epilogue, pinups, a 22-page section of maps, guide pages, and cutaways, as well as reprinting the 2010 Free Comic Book Day story as a prologue to the tale.

Long awaited, and just as fun as ever. Petersen never disappoints with his stunning artwork.

Powerful. And in many ways, quite sad. It is hard to think of Celanawe as a young mouse in love with his Bronwyn, but while we never see her, to win his heart, she had to be quite the mouse. The ferrets, most of all their King, shame many a mouse with their honor.

The latest adventure of the Mouse Guard is in the style of a quest. Family relations draw Celanawe away from the guard in search of the long lost Black Axe. He is level-headed and recounts their journey with precision, giving plenty of details, as well as explaining his thoughts. Being reserved in nature, his emotions are not often expressed, and as the style allows for few expressions, his words are essential to its intended depth. The style remains the same, however this time the mice are much easier to tell apart. There are differences in terms of content, whereas other predators have always been shown as mice hunters, the ferrets of this island are a pleasant surprise. Their king, Luthebon is noble and his kingdom is a nice addition into the medieval setting of the series. Celanawe leaves on a rather sombre note, becoming the next link in the legend, but hints are left that this is not the last we will see of him. The Black Axe is a step away from the day to day happenings of the guard, but it still embodies their courage, and their purpose to protect mice.
