Following World War II, the establishment of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) became a pillar of the cold war philosophies of containment and collective security. Each nation that joined NATO agreed that an attack on any of the treaty members would be considered an attack on all of them. This military alliance also marked a drastic change in U.S. foreign policy, which had previously held that the nation would not become closely involved in European affairs.
