Harry S. Truman Announces His Fair Deal Program Ca. 1949Unknown - 1949
In 1949 President Harry S. Truman attempted to take advantage of the nation's booming postwar economy by initiating his Fair Deal program, which would have enacted a broad spectrum of domestic policy reforms including an antidiscrimination law and a national health insurance program. With the exception of the heavily amended Housing Act of 1949, the conservative Congress quickly voted down the majority of Truman's proposals.
