Through the late 18th and early 19th centuries, physical education was slowly recognized as a crucial part of school curriculum in the United States. By 1921 over 25 states had physical education laws requiring daily exercise for students. Most U.S. schools also hold recess periods, allowing children to play outside under the supervision of teachers.
