On June 22, 1944, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Servicemen's Readjustment Act (also called the GI Bill of Rights), which provided servicemen returning from World War II with funding to go to college and buy homes. This created a significant market for mass-produced houses. Levittown, New York, was one of the first suburbs in the United States to be built from such model homes.
