The concept of a confederacy between European countries began to take hold shortly after the end of World War II. Scholars, students, and diplomats began to argue that such a union between European nations could prevent another outbreak of war across the continent. The European Coal and Steel Community began in 1951 and eventually morphed into the European Union (EU) in 1993.
