Economic prosperity, coupled with marketing efforts by the growing automobile industry, caused a dramatic increase in car ownership during the 1950s. As more people moved from cities to the suburbs, commute times lengthened, and the car became a sort of home away from home. The Interstate Highway Act of 1956 created more than 40,000 miles of expressway, making long-distance travel easier and encouraging people to spend even more time behind the wheel.
