Radio Free Europe was established in 1949 with secret CIA support to broadcast U.S. propaganda into Soviet-controlled nations in Eastern Europe. It was one of many Western attempts to halt the spread of communism during the cold war. The aim of the broadcasts was to provoke civic unrest and instability in nations that were behind the Iron Curtain.
