Widespread fear of a nuclear attack by the Soviet Union led the U.S. government to create the Federal Civil Defensive Administration (FCDA) in 1950. Films instructed children and their families how to respond to a nuclear attack by ducking and covering themselves. These, and other instances of propaganda in the cold war, were meant to reassure civilians that they could survive a nuclear war.
