After President Harry S. Truman declined to run for a second term in 1952, the presidential race fell to Democratic nominee Adlai Stevenson and Republican nominee Dwight Eisenhower. During the campaign Stevenson focused on the successes of the two previous Democratic administrations, while Eisenhower pledged to reduce spending and bring U.S. forces home from the Korean War.
