As the Democratic presidential candidate in the 1952 election, Illinois governor Adlai Stevenson pledged to fight communism within the United States and continue governmental support of labor and agriculture. He also argued for changes to the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act, which greatly reduced the political and economic powers of labor unions.
