During the 1950s the second big wave of prison riots broke out, reflecting the growth of the prisoners'-rights movement. The first wave had been from 1929 - 1932 and the third from 1968 - 1973. In 1952 prisoners at the New Jersey State Prison rioted on three separate occasions. They destroyed cells and textile equipment and held guards hostage. In the aftermath, formal investigations were made into prison conditions but improvements were never made. That same year, at the Jackson prison in Michigan, prisoners took control of the prison for four days.
