In 1952 then-Senator Richard Nixon ran for Vice President on General Eisenhower's ticket. During the campaign, Nixon was accused of accumulating a fund of $18,000 from supporters in return for the promise of political favors. In what became a landmark political speech, Nixon addressed the American people on television, giving details of his personal finances and net worth. He acknowledged that he did have a fund -fully audited- which he used for those political activities that, in his opinion, should not be funded at taxpayer expense, but he denied exchanging any political favors for the contributions. He also admitted to receiving one political gift: a dog which his young daughter named Checkers.
