As part of the arms and space race of the cold war, military scientists conducted experiments testing pilots' abilities to withstand the levels of gravitational force they would encounter while flying high-powered jets. The research into gravity and, subsequently, weightlessness, crossed over to the developing space program. President Dwight D. Eisenhower made space exploration an official national agenda item when he signed the National Space Act in 1958, establishing the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
