In order to test the effects of the blast and fallout of an atomic bomb, during the 1940s and 1950s the U.S. military detonated bombs at test sites in the unpopulated deserts of the Southwestern United States. Scientists used cameras to record the blasts and gauge the ability of different materials to withstand an atomic strike.
