In October 1956 a student protest in Budapest, fueled by the frustration with a tyrannical communist government and Soviet interference, devolved into a bloody street battle that spread throughout Hungary. Student and intellectual protesters of Hungarian Communist leader Erno Gero's oppressive state gathered by the of thousands and were eventually fired upon by the national security police. In an uprising followed by the world, Hungarian soldiers and civilians across the country formed militias and waged war against Soviet military forces and the Hungarian security police who were loyal to Gero.
