Barry Hannah's death on March 1 brought writers and readers out of the woodwork to mourn an irrevocable loss to American letters. Now, combining the best of the four story collections he published during his lifetime--Airships, Captain Maximus, Bats Out of Hell, and High Lonesome--and drawing from his final never-before-seen manuscript, Long, Last, Happy will cement his legacy and serve as the definitive collection of his finest work in the story form. From his first collection, Airships, Barry Hannah made the literary world sit up and take notice. His ferocious, glittering prose and sui generis worldview introduced readers to a literary New South. Long, Last, Happy confirms Barry as one of our most brilliant voices.

This batch of colorful 30 “fish tales” are full of people speak that you’d never hear if your English teacher dictated all human communication. They’re probably best spoken—than read. Clearly Hannah believed in the power of language to convey the essence of humanity. Not by imitation, but daring to enter the never-touched terrains. I was in awe of his art of words and the resonance generated from them. Experiencing 40 years worth of his writing in the collection is truly rich.
