Definitely a family movie! I wasn't aware that penquins lived to stay this small. I did some research and found out that penquins are actually Birds and not Mammals. Quite interesting!

This family / adventure movie is about "Little Penguins" or (Little Blue Penguins) trying to survive in Australia. With the struggle of fox nearby, that searching for a meal ticket, have now found the penquins. Parts of the community are trying to save the poor little Little Penguins, with the help of "Oddball", a local dog and that becomes the penguin's protector. I enjoyed this movie and truly recommend it!

Very cute movie -great for kids. Think I will buy for it for my niece for Christmas - she loves animals. Based on a true story about a dog named Oddball who is a bit of a troublemaker. The owner's daughter works at the town's (Warnambool, Victoria, Australia - I think!) penguin sanctuary which was her departed mother's special project. The penguins are called fairy penguins (because they are small) and live on an island off of the town. The penguin population has been declining since they are hunted by foxes. Oddball seems to have a knack for watching over the little penguins and keeping the foxes away. The added love stories were a bit stupid but the dog and the penguins very, very cute! Good family movie if you need something for the kids or fun for adults who enjoy animals and the scenic Australian coastal setting.

This is a movie that deserves to be seen and enjoyed by young and old. The accompanying video about the making of Oddball is as interesting as, or even more interesting than, the fictional version. The film is based on the true story of a community in southern Australia trying to save a population of fairy penguins from destruction by foxes. (Foxes are not native to Australia; the penguins are.) It's quite current, as the effort goes on to this day. The environmental aspect is unique because for once humans are not directly the cause of the crisis but can, with a lot of effort, help to be the saviors. A huge plus in the film is that the scenery of the area is spectacularly beautiful.

Feel good yet very meaningful Aussie comic family film about Oddball, namesake of a Maremma sheep dog that was a natural protector of a local fairy penguin colony on the Middle Island penguin sanctuary from foxes. Besides the extraordinary true story in wild life conservation, excellent acting and script, particularly the interactions between the little girl and grandpa who looked like a younger Santa Claus, always doing his best to keep his daughter and the little girl happy. Sick of "Bad Grandpa" movies? This one is for all the good grandpas. The other star in the film is the scenic "12 Apostles" off the Victoria's dramatic coastline in southern end of Australia. Watch the real story in "Extras" that inspired Oddball. For more up to date info but a mood spoiler, read article in summary.

Opening narrative:

Far, far away in a magical part of the world, there is a special place - the sleepy town of Warrnambool.
Where fairy penguins - the littlest penguins of all - call home. They nest on a rocky place called Middle Island. For years, the townspeople walked the shallow channel to the island to watch thousands of fairy penguins return home at night. Because the penguins brought a special magic to the town. But one night, foxes found that they too could walk to the island. And in just a few short years...
Grandma's proud of us.
-How do you figure that?
Well... when it's Windy, she's blowing us kisses. And when the sun sparkles off the water, she's laughing. And up there, she's on every star in the sky looking out for us.
-Who's told you that?
Mum did.

You did it, Dad. I'm proud of you.
-Nah. We all did it. That's what I'm proud of.
You shot him with a tranq gun?
-I didn't mean to.
Oh, that'll make it hurt less.
Livvie. Be careful.
-I Will. I'll be right back.
I'm pretty sure this is the opposite of fine.
Em. I didn't just lose a wife. I lost my best friend.
-Oh, yes. But I lost my mum.
But be warned, when they're forced to put their plans on hold, our approval ratings might be in for a bit of a hammering.
-Oh, that's my strategic advantage. No-one approves of me, anyway.
