The idiosyncratic and innovative music of Rosanne Cash, daughter of Johnny Cash, made her one of the pre-eminent singer/songwriters of her day. Although she is often classified as a country artist, her music draws on many genres, including folk, pop, rock, and blues. Many of the selections on the Essential compilation are signposts of sorts for the landmarks of her life, and the personal and musical are essentially interwoven.

I don't know Rosanne Cash's entire body of work enough to speak to whether this 2-disc set reflects everything that is essential, but I enjoyed this collection immensely. It includes "Seven Year Ache," my favorite of her songs. Her voice is unique and beautiful, and she is a fantastic songwriter. This set and more by Rosanne Cash are also available to download and keep at a rate of five songs per week through Hennepin County Library's Freegal subscription; find Freegal under Online Resources.

Rosanne Cash from 1978 to present his built up a long list of recordings. Most are all original songs she wrote and first performed. Other artists have also recorded her material. The Essential Rosanne Cash had to be a 2 CD set. Usually an artist only has enough "essential" material for one CD. This is a tribute to her talent, especially lives in the shadow of her legendary father Johnny Cash. The "Essential Rosanne Cash" offer about 90 minutes of a female country artist that has only gained popular since her original recordings. She also has an autobiography that is available at your KCLS library. My final words of praise for Rosanne Cash is she sings from the heart. I appreciate her honesty and effort she shows to shine light with her music!
