This documentary follows young trainee doctors from the pioneering medical school McMaster University in Ontario, Canada over the course of 12 months. Founded in 1965, McMaster virtually abolished lectures in favor of problem-based learning- which encourages students to find answers for themselves. This style of teaching aims to prepare students for the continual challenge of keeping up with the latest advances in medical knowledge and has been adopted by schools around the world. With an emphasis on early patient contact, students are taught the importance of good communication and to put the patient first. Students are also placed in clinical settings to gain real-life experience and determine their specialization. Ultimately, the school asks fundamental questions about what makes a really good doctor and how best to prepare young doctors to make difficult life and death decisions.
