China's new primary health reform and rural health insurance are crucial for providing affordable and sustainable health care for its 1.4 billion people. Eighty percent of Chinese patients turn up at big hospitals and have to wait sometimes for days to get treatment. With hospitals as profit-making business, the costs are prohibitively high. Rising living standards and a rapidly aging society provide a unique challenge of scale: how to provide healthcare to the biggest country in the world. This film investigates the government's health reform at one of its oldest hospitals and at a pioneering primary health center. It also covers how the government rural insurance scheme has given health coverage to 700 million peasants who previously had to pay for all their own medical care.
