Each scene of the book was like a picture. The narrator described these individual pictures well enough for the reader to visualize what is going on.

The pictures, however, did not connect. The scenes of the book were often incoherent and confusing to follow as a whole.

Lê thị diễm thúy is a promising writer whom I'll be watching closely. I'm very curious about her development as a writer in the years to come. This first novel feels very much like something the author had to get off her chest. I wonder about the second and third novel.

Not sure why this was picked out by a librarian as a good book. It jumps around too much. There are a lot better books about the refugee experience.
