There are unexpected consequences when thirteen-year-old Gracie sends texts pretending to be her bashful best friend, Sienna, and their friend Emmett starts texting back pretending to be shy A.J.
Tall and weirdly good-looking A.J. makes Gracie feel ways she's never felt before. But it turns out A.J. likes Gracie's beautiful best friend, Sienna. Obviously Gracie is happy for Sienna, and helps her compose the best texts, responding to A.J.&#x;s surprisingly funny and appealing texts, just as if she were Sienna. Gracie has had lots of practice being the sidekick, but this time she find that even with all the heartbreak, there can be explosions of hope and moments of perfect happiness.

At times cute and laugh out loud funny, other times is was a little to reminiscent of my time in middle school. Rachel Vail perfectly captures the pure awkwardness that is the relationship (be they romantic or platonic) minefield that is middle school. A great choice for middle grade readers!

Transitioning into teenage life is awkward for Gracie but fortunately, she is surrounded by her amazing, circle of friends: Sienna, Emmett and AJ. They share subtle inside jokes about their Loud Crowd classmates and they celebrate odd characters on the streets of New York City! Yet, best of all, they laugh at themselves and accept each other’s diverse interests (i.e. Opera classes and even all things tortoise!). They support each other – even complying with the Loud Crowd’s plot to be matchmakers for Sienna and AJ. - compelling them both to send flirtatious texts! But awkwardness and complications ensue when the texts (reading like a professional comedy routine) are actually not composed by the intended couple. Find out who the real, duelling, text messengers are and if the circle of friends can survive it all! Such an accessible, touching and powerful story reflecting the subtle realities of teenage-hood, written with realistic humour, language and sensitivity.
