Why Your Sleep Is Broken and How to Fix It

There is a lot of good information in this book, but I have to say I am not wild about the style in which it is written. The author is constantly trying to be funny or cute. I found that to be distracting. Having said that, the book is still worth reading. The most useful take-aways for me were: 1. It is nearly impossible to evaluate your own sleep accurately. On those nights where you just can’t fall asleep, you are getting a lot more sleep than you think. The author also notes that even when we are resting and not actually sleeping, we get plenty of benefit from the rest. If you really think you are not sleeping enough, do a sleep study, and that will give you accurate idea of how much sleep you are getting. In the meantime, relax and do not obsess or stress out if you are lying awake part of the night. 2. On the flip side, some people who think they sleep great have sleep apnea or other conditions that mean they are not really getting restful sleep, even though they are unaware they are constantly waking up for short periods. If you think you are sleeping fine but you are tired all the time, do a sleep study.
