My rating is for the film, not the novel, not the intent of the novel. There is no way that a film could have been made in America in 1939 that would accurately reflect the intent of the novel. The themes of the novel would completely violate the Hays Code and/or the desires of the 1939 film audiences. Audiences of the time demanded great romance and boy did they get it with this film. I am actually shocked that the scene of adulterous love at the end of the film was allowed. This film won the Oscar for best black and white cinematography and also received 7 more Oscar noms. See this version for romance and then see another version like the one with Tom Hardy for the societal travesties that were explored in the novel.
