Newbery medalist Schlitz tells a tale of young princess Cora who is burdened with the role of being a royal and not allowed anytime to be a child. Asking for a dog from her fairy godmother brings Cora not what she expected but maybe what she needed. Floca's illustrations fit perfectly with the traditional fairy tale style and pacing. This early reader chapter book will resonate with the 2-4 grader's struggle of accepting responsibilities like school and yet still wanting to play in the mud. It also acknowledges that play is an important part of a child's life.
