The front of the medallion depicts a kneeling enslaved Black man in chains, with text: "Am I not a man and a brother?" The reverse is stamped in blind: "Wedgwood". The design was originally created by Wedgwood as a seal for the use of London's Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade. The ceramic was likely modelled for Wedgwood by William Hackwood. The medallion is inserted in an oval wooden frame with a yellow metal fillet; a brass hanging ring is affixed to the top of the frame. The back is covered partly with a piece of mother of pearl, cut in the center to expose the maker's stamp. Accompanied by a wood, brass, and velvet stand with a glass domed cover. The gift of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Chatfield in 1973.
