Wooden printing block used for the second pictorial masthead of the Liberator newspaper, circa 1838. The Liberator was an abolitionist newspaper published in Boston by William Lloyd Garrison and William Knapp from 1831 to 1865; this masthead was used for the newspaper from March 1838 to May 1850. The block is in two pieces, joined with pegs. Two layers of wood veneer were applied to the base of the block but are now separated from it. Gift of the family of William Lloyd Garrison in April 1899.
